Vol. 69 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export Bounty System.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether he is aware that the present system of administration of export bounties on fat cattle under which it is impossible for the exporter to ascertain at the time of export whether his beasts are entitled to bounty or not, is causing very grave dissatisfaction and hardship to the farming community, and if he will state what are the reasons for the present procedure, and whether he will take immediate steps to change the procedure and to make a more satisfactory arrangement.

I cannot admit that the present system of administering the export bounty on fat cattle is causing dissatisfaction and hardship to the farming community, but in deference to the representations made by the Deputy and others, I have already arranged that exporters will be specially advised within a day or two subsequent to export of the cattle, of the number accepted for bounty in each lot presented for inspection. The present procedure has been adopted as the most satisfactory method of facilitating export and preventing delay, and with the arrangement as to notification now in operation, I see no reason for modifying it.
