Vol. 70 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Radio Factory.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the conditions prevailing in the Waterford radio factory, where the firm is unable either to provide a full working week or pay reasonable wages, owing to the competition from the firms which can import the manufactured articles in parts into Éire, and who are charged the same duty as is charged on the raw material needed to give full time and to compete in the open market against the firms who actually import and assemble in Dublin, and if the Minister will take steps to see that special preference is given to all raw material that is used for manufacture by citizens in this country.

I am aware of the conditions referred to in the first part of the question. Representations which have been made in this connection by Electrical and Musical Industries (Ireland) Limited, are at present under consideration in my Department.
