Vol. 70 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Kerry Bridge.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the bridge at Burnham, Dingle, is in danger of collapse, and if he is prepared to allocate money to have it reconstructed and thus provide a safe passage for farmers bringing milk to the creamery and for children attending school.

I am advised that the bridge referred to in the Deputy's question has been in a dilapidated condition, and abandoned for vehicular traffic for many years past. Further, that, when the Land Commission divided the Ventry estate, to which the bridge was formerly an approach, they constructed a new road in the most suitable position for the general convenience of the farmers concerned. The new road is now maintained by the county council, and is also used by children and others having business at Colaiste Ide, Burnham.

The distance saved by reopening the disused bridge would be relatively small, and the public utility of the work would not appear to justify the very considerable expenditure involved. It is not, therefore, proposed to allocate public moneys towards the proposed work.
