Vol. 70 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - London Matriculation Examination.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that financial hardship is inflicted on students who desire to pass the London matriculation examination, because of being obliged to travel to Belfast or London; that many Irish students take this examination in order to obtain London University degrees because attendance at lectures is not obligatory, and that it gives a chance to boys who may be unable to attend lectures at the University Colleges, through financial reasons, to study privately and in their spare time for the London degrees, and if he will give the consent necessary to enable the London University Board to arrange for the holding of the matriculation examinations in centres in Eire.

The Deputy's question suggests that my consent, or the consent of the Government, is all that is necessary to enable the London University Board to arrange for the holding of its matriculation examinations at centres in Eire; this is not correct. The London University Board's regulations require not only that the Government should give its consent to the holding of the examination in Eire but also that it should take full responsibility for the conduct of these centres, the provision of accommodation, superintendence, etc. It is the question of taking responsibility for these matters and of defraying the cost involved therein, rather than the obtaining of the consent mentioned, that has so far prevented the establishment of centres here for these examinations.
