Vol. 70 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Artificial Manures.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that artificial manures are being offered for sale at a price in excess of what existing agricultural prices warrant; that manure manufacturers have increased their prices and the railway company their freight charges, and if he will have enquiries made with a view to issuing licences for the importation of continental manures which can be sold here at a price below that now being charged for the home manufactured article and thus enable farmers to manure their land adequately.

I am aware, generally, of the increases in recent months made by manufacturers in the prices of artificial manures and by the railway companies in their freight charges. I am not satisfied, on the information before me, that I would be justified in altering the present arrangements as to the restrictions of imports of artificial manures into this country.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he aware that tariffs and monopolies invariably have the effect of increasing prices, and will he try to do something to prevent that increase? I do not think that all this restriction of imports is necessary.

I do not agree with you.

Is the Minister further aware that the raising of the price of artificial manures results in the diminution of the quality of manure put out, with disastrous results to the agricultural land in this country?

That is a separate question.
