Vol. 71 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Legislation for Dealing with “Easy Payment” System.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to comments in recent court cases on the hardships which befall certain persons who were victims of prosecutions brought for default under "easy payment" systems, wherein it was stated that if the periodical payments fall short, lapse, or are delayed, the purchaser loses all right whatever in the goods purchased (even though more than 90 per cent. of the full purchase amount may have been discharged), and the goods pass back to the seller; and, if he is aware of these hardships, will he take steps to have the law amended, so that in future persons who purchase goods on these instalment plans will, if the contract lapses, get credit at least for the payments that have actually been made.

The matters mentioned in the Deputy's question are being inquired into.
