Vol. 71 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fair Wage Clause in Bread Contracts.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that contracts for the supply of bread to public institutions maintained out of public funds have recently been given on the basis of quotations that are possible only because the contractors in question are paying very low wages and observing bad labour conditions, and whether it is his intention that in future the Fair Wages Clause will be inserted in all contracts for the supply of bread to public institutions.

As regards the first part of the question, I am not aware that such contracts have been entered into by local bodies. I understand that a condition is generally included in contracts for supplies to local institutions regulating the appointment and pay of workers thereunder in accordance with the conditions and rates of pay recognised for the district to which the contract relates.
