Vol. 71 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Meath Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state if the estate known as the Casey estate, Kilrush, Clonmellon, County Westmeath, which comprises about 90 Irish acres, is in the hands of the Land Commission, and, if so, when it is likely to be divided.

Mr. Boland

The Land Commission propose to have inquiries made to ascertain the suitability for their purposes of the lands of Kilrush Upper and Kilrush Lower in the occupation of Mr. John J. Casey, comprising some 118 statute acres, but until these inquiries are completed it is not possible to indicate if any action will be taken for the acquisition and division of the lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that in the recent division of the Sheridan estate at Macetown, Tara, County Meath, two uneconomic holders with less than £10 valuation and two men living in labourers' cottages in the vicinity of this estate were denied additions to their existing holdings, while others living in the one house with three farms could get an additional farm, and if it is intended to have an investigation made into the division of this estate.

Mr. Boland

The Deputy does not specify the particular applicants in question and they cannot be identified from a scrutiny of the list of applicants for land on the Sheridan estate.

There do not appear to have been any applications from uneconomic holders such as the Deputy describes other than from board of health cottiers who have been already given accommodation plots or have some land. The Land Commission have divided the estate to what they considered the best local advantage, having regard to the means and competency of the applicants to work land, and the case does not call for further investigation.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what is the cause of the delay in dividing the estate of Whelan's, of Harristown, Kinnegad, County Meath, and when this estate is likely to be divided, and what other estates in the Ballinabrackey end of Meath are in the hands of the Land Commission at the moment, and when they are likely to be divided.

Mr. Boland

The Land Commission have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of the untenanted lands of Harristown on the estate of Elizabeth Whelan, Record No. S.8261. The owner has objected to the acquisition of the lands, and until her objection has been disposed of, it will not be possible to state whether or when the lands will be acquired.

The Land Commission have not at present in hands for division any lands in the vicinity of Ballinabrackey, County Meath.
