Vol. 71 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Railway Branch Lines.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been called to a statement made by Mr. W.H. Morton, on behalf of the Great Southern Railways, that with the consent of the Minister for Industry and Commerce about 120 miles of unremunerative railways had been closed and further branch lines were under consideration for similar treatment, and if he will state if the railway company have made applications to his Department for his consent to close further branch lines, and where such lines are situate.

I have seen a newspaper report of the statement referred to in the first part of the question. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has received applications from the Great Southern Railways requesting his consent to have the branch lines from Tuam to Sligo, and Claremorris to Ballinrobe, closed, and what steps, if any, are being taken by his Department to have those branch lines kept running.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. As regards the second part of the question: Under Section 9 of the Railways Act, 1933, the railway company may by order be empowered to discontinue train services on unremunerative branch lines, subject to the provision by them of adequate substitute road transport services. No steps have been or are required to be taken by my Department in anticipation of an application for such an order.
