Vol. 71 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vesting of Mayo Holdings.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission will take steps at an early date to expedite the vesting and re-arrangement of the holdings on the Carter and Bingham estates, situate in the Barony of Erris, County Mayo, in view of the fact that the tenants on those estates are being deprived of grants and loans for the erection of houses.

Mr. Boland

The Land Commission have already taken steps to expedite re-arrangement of the Shaen Carter Estate. All the holdings on this large estate have been retained and divided into six groups for separate treatment in regard to the carrying out of improvements and re-arrangement.

The holdings on the several Bingham Estates were vested in the Land Commission under Section 9, of the Land Act 1931, and before the revesting of the holdings in the tenants it is proposed to have them inspected with a view to carrying out improvements and re-arrangement; but having regard to the large number of estates in County Mayo requiring re-arrangement, it is not possible at present to state when the work on these estates is likely to be put in hands.
