Vol. 73 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leix County Council.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that prior to the passing of the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936, the rules of the Leix County Council deprived a worker of the Saturday half-holiday if he had two broken days of work when the working week was 54 hours, and that since the passing of the Conditions of Employment Act, which specifies a 48 hours' working week ceasing at 12.15 p.m., on Saturday, the Leix County Council continues to apply the old rules and thereby deducts from the workers' pay one half day's pay in addition to the actual time lost when a worker loses two quarter days; if he is aware that the terms of contract of these workers are prejudicially affected by this practice; and if he will have an inquiry made with a view to taking action under the Act.

I am not aware of the rules of the county council in relation to this matter. It is not clear from the question what action under the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936, is contemplated by the Deputy, but if he will arrange to have more specific details furnished to my Department I will have the case examined.
