asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantity and value of annual production in each of the years 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, of the articles (twine, rope, etc.) to which Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 158) Order, 1938, refers; the average number of wage earners employed weekly, and the total amount of the yearly wages paid in each year.

Binder twine is specifically excluded from the Order referred to above. Separate particulars in respect of binder twine were not required to be furnished in connection with the Censuses of Industrial Production taken in respect of years prior to 1936, and accordingly, it is possible that some binder twine was included in the figures quoted for years prior to 1936.
As the firms manufacturing the articles referred to in Emergency Imposition of Duties Order 158 of 1938 were also engaged in the production of other articles, it is not possible to furnish separate figures for the numbers of wage earners, or the total amount of wages paid in each year to those workers engaged in the production of twine, rope, etc., to which the Order referred to above relates.
Arising out of the Minister's reply, can he say what particulars were before him regarding employment and regarding wages when he assented to an Order increasing the customs duty on twines and rope to 60 per cent.?
That is a separate question.
Very good.
