Vol. 73 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Woollen Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there exists much unemployment in the woollen manufacturing industry, and that increased stocks are in hands although there has been decreased production; that the mills have lost a considerable export trade since and during the economic war; if he has considered the letter from Messrs. Looney and McCarthy, Cork, requesting an inquiry into the causes; and if he will state what action he is proposing to take in the matter.

As regards the first part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to a reply which I gave to a somewhat similar question by Deputy Hurley on the 16th instant. I am not aware that at present there are increased stocks in hands. I am aware that there has been a decline in the export trade, but I would point out to the Deputy that that decline manifested itself for some years before 1932. I have seen the letter referred to, but I do not think that any useful purpose would be served by holding, as the writers request, a public inquiry into allegations made by another association regarding the position of the woollen mills.

Does the Minister still say that there is no serious unemployment in the woollen industry, considering the fact that out of, roughly, 3,000 people who were employed in that industry, 700 are now totally unemployed, and about 1,400 are casually employed? In view of that fact, does the Minister still say that there is not serious unemployment?

The statistics furnished to me by woollen millers concerning the number of persons in their employment show no substantial decrease.

Is the Minister aware that in Blarney factory, where 700 people were employed, the number now employed is only 100, and they are casually employed? Will he deny that?

I am not in a position to give any information concerning any individual mill.
