Vol. 73 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Indemnifying Commissioners of Public Works.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether the Commissioners of Public Works were indemnified against claims and expenses, etc., arising under the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1934; the Employers' Liability Act, 1880; the Fatal Accidents Act, 1846; and at common law, or against any such claims and expenses, etc., from workmen directly employed by them on arterial drainage works, maintenance of marine works, fishery piers and landing slips, airport construction works, and employment schemes during each or any of the years ended 31st March, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1938, by the making of any payments to any insurance company or companies, and, if so, if he will state in respect of each of these years the company or companies to whom such payments were made, and the amount of the payment made in respect of each year.

Policies of insurance covering the indemnification indicated were made by the commissioners with the Employers' Liability Assurance Corporation, Ltd., for the periods 1st January to 31st December, 1931, and 1st January to 31st December, 1932, the amounts paid by way of premium being £1,672 8s. 2d. and £2,381 6s. 4d. respectively. As from 1st January, 1933, policies were effected with the Irish Employers' Mutual Insurance Association Ltd., the periods covered and amounts paid by way of premium being, 1st January to 31st December, 1933, £6,511 12s. 10d.; 1st January to 31st March, 1934, £1,691 14s. 6d.; 1st April, 1934, to 31st March, 1935, £4,233 12s. 10d.; 1st April, 1935, to 31st March, 1936, £3,482 8s. 11d.; 1st April, 1936, to 31st March, 1937, £5,550 4s. 9d.; and 1st April, 1937, to 31st March, 1938, £7,623 3s. 0d.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the amount of the premium depends upon the actual amount of the wages paid.

Do I understand that each of the years from 1933 to 1938 are so covered?

Oh, yes, the full figures are in the table.
