Vol. 73 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Service Pensions.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he received from Mr. Thomas O'Brien, 38 Wolfe Tone Square, Bray, County Wicklow, a claim for a military service pension under the Act of 1934; whether the claim has been considered; and, if not, what is the reason for the delay.

A claim was received from Mr. O'Brien under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, but on investigation it was found that he had already applied under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924, and had been refused a certificate of military service. Mr. O'Brien has now appealed against the findings of the Board of Assessors under the Act of 1924, and that appeal is at present under consideration in the office of the Referee.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether a military service pension was awarded to John Cooper, an inmate of the Dublin Union, the weekly amount of such pension, and the basis on which such amount has been calculated; whether any arrears of pension were paid to Mr. Cooper, and, if so, how much; and if he will state if the pension is being paid in full direct to Mr. Cooper.

As a result of his application under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, Mr. John Cooper was certified by the referee as having given 3 3/25 years of service in Grade E, and a pension of £15 12s. per annum, based at the rate of £5 for each year of service, awarded to him from 1st October, 1934.

Mr. Cooper was notified of the award on 9th May, 1938, and arrears for the period 1st October, 1934, to 31st March, 1938, amounting to £54 12s., were paid to him on 24th May, 1938. Pension is being paid at the full rate direct to Mr. Cooper.

Is the Minister aware that the Dublin Union Commissioners are abstracting from Mr. Cooper 5/- of his 6/- a week military service pension?

I am not aware of that.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he will state the total number of men in receipt of military service pensions and admitted to have had a 1916 record who are being paid such pensions while inmates of (a) the Dublin Union, and (b) other Poor Law institutions.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the names and addresses of persons in County Sligo to whom pensions have been awarded under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, and the amount of the pension in each case.
