Vol. 73 No. 6

Written Answers. - Housing Costs.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state (a) the total all-in cost and (b) the total building cost of the 12,021 new houses completed by the 30th June, 1938, under the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Acts, 1932-37, by local authorities in urban areas, and to which Section 6 (1) (a) (i) of the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1932, applies, and the total amount of this cost which is being borne by the Exchequer.

(a) The all-in cost of 10,134* houses eligible for contributions under Section 6 (1) (a) (i) of the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1932, was £3,585,531; (b) the building cost of these houses was £3,060,428; (c) the amount of the all-in cost which is being borne by the Exchequer is £2,142,262; it should be understood that the figures given at (a), (b) and (c) are compiled partly from exact information and partly from information that is, at this date, not fully complete.

*The number of new houses, 12,021, mentioned in the question and given in reply to the Deputy's question on the 2nd instant was compiled from particulars given by the local authorities at the end of June last. On subsequent examination of the claims for payment of contributions to annual loan charges it was found that the number of completed houses eligible for contributions under Section 6 (1) (a) (i) was 10,134. The decrease in the number is counter-balanced by a corresponding increase in the number eligible for contributions under Section 6 (1) (a) (ii).
