Vol. 73 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Supply for Cork Village.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that the village of Aghada, County Cork, is completely without water for drinking or sanitation purposes, that this is causing great hardship, particularly on the school children to the number of nearly 100 who attend the village school; and, if so, if he will state the cause of this state of affairs, and what steps he intends to take to provide the inhabitants with a hygienic supply of water.

I am not aware that the position is as stated in the first portion of the question. I understand that there is already a pump situated at the northern end of the village of Aghada, and that an adequate water supply is available therefrom, but that the location of the pump is inconvenient from the point of view of a number of residents at the southern end of the village. The board of health proposed to provide an additional pump, but the site selected therefor was so near the existing pump that it would be superfluous, so far as the northern portion of the village was concerned, and of no advantage to the southern portion. The proposal, as submitted, could not, therefore, be sanctioned. It is a matter for the board of health to arrange for the formulation of any appropriate alternative proposals.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there was a proposal put up for a gravitation supply for that village, and that it was turned down by the Department?

The principle was not turned down—a particular scheme was turned down.
