Vol. 74 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emergency Duties on Sugar.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the loss to the Exchequer up to March 31st, 1938, and the estimated loss during the present financial year, arising out of the arrangement entered into with the British Government in February, 1937, for the purpose of removing the then existing emergency duties on sugar and subsidiary products of United Kingdom origin.

If, as from 1st March, 1937, the imports of sugar and subsidiary products, which would have attracted emergency duties but for the termination of such duties as from that date, remained at the same level as during the last year in which the emergency duties were in operation, that is, the year ended 28th February, 1937, the loss to the Exchequer arising out of the removal as from 1st March, 1937, of the emergency duties on sugar and subsidiary products of United Kingdom origin would have been about £9,200 for the period to 31st March, 1938, and would be about £8,500 for the present financial year.
