Vol. 74 No. 1

Written Answers. - New Land Holdings.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of each of the last ten years for which the information is available (a) the number of new holdings created (not including holdings provided in Gaeltacht colonies); (b) the average area; (c) the average poor law valuation per acre; and (d) the average amount of the adjusted annuities per acre of such holdings; and, further, if he will state in respect of such holdings the total average annual payment per holding required to meet annuities and all other sums due to Government Departments in respect of loans or otherwise.

Mr. Boland

The statistics of the Land Commission have not been kept in such a form as to provide the full information desired by the Deputy. Only for the last three years have the schemes of resale of untenanted land acquired under the Land Acts, 1923-36, been statistically analysed in sufficient detail to show particulars of new agricultural holdings created, as distinct from accommodation and turbary plots, etc. The following statement contains such information on the points in question as is at present available:—

New agricultural holdings (exclusive of accommodation and turbary plots, etc.) created by the Land Commission on the division of untenanted land under the Land Acts, 1923-36 in each of the last three financial years— as distinct from enlargements of existing uneconomic holdings.

Particulars of the Poor Law Valuation of new holdings created are not known with sufficient completeness to enable them to be statistically recorded.

No information is available as to the total sums due to other Government Departments by purchasers of new holdings created by the Land Commission.
