asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantity and value of turf drawn from the bog in each county and province in Éire during each of the years 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1938; and the total quantity so drawn in each of these years.

The following statement gives the quantities of turf drawn from the bog in the years 1935, 1936 and 1937. The returns for 1938 are in process of collection:—

The estimated total values of the turf drawn in the corresponding years were — 1935, £3 109,000; 1936, £3,397,000; 1937, £3,455,000. Values have not been estimated by counties or provinces.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of turf-cutting co-operative societies existing in each county and province; the total number of members in each county and province; and the gross total of such societies and members on the 31st March, 1939.

I will circulate a statement giving the information asked for by the Deputy so far as it is available in my Department. The statement shows the number of turf societies registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts, 1893 to 1936, at 31st March, 1939, classified as desired by the Deputy. Membership figures as at 31st March, 1939, are not available, but figures compiled from the last return filed by each of the societies with the Registrar of Friendly Societies are given in the statement. These membership figures take no account of 21 inactive societies which had not furnished returns and were still on the register on the 31st March, 1939, pending cancellation of their registry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of sacks which were distributed up to the 31st March, 1938, in each county and province, in connection with the development of the peat fuel industry, and the total number and value of the sacks so distributed.

The total number of sacks remaining distributed and in circulation at 31st March, 1938, in each county and province in connection with the development of peat fuel industry was 57,549. The original cost of these sacks was £4,556.

The distribution by counties and provinces is set out hereunder:—

These figures do not include issues of Sacks since the commencement of the Scheme as, owing to frequent issues and returns to and from the various Co-operative Turf Societies, such figures would be difficult to compile.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number and value of the sacks purchased for distribution in connection with the development of the peat fuel industry; the total number and value of the sacks distributed; and the total amount of money received by way of (a) purchase, and (b) hire, up to the 31st March, 1939.

The total number of sacks purchased in connection with the development of the peat fuel industry up to 31st March, 1939, was 231,078. The original cost of these sacks was £17,837 9s. 11d.

All the sacks were distributed and a sum of £6,712 16s. 4d. was received on account of sales and hireage. It would not be possible to divide this amount as between (a) purchase and (b) hire, without considerable labour, but it may be assumed that the greater bulk of it was in respect of hireage.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount of money due to be paid in each of the years ended March 31st, 1936, 1937, 1938, and 1939, in respect of sacks loaned under the turf development scheme; and the total amount actually paid.

The system of hireage of sacks was substantially discontinued before the 1st April, 1935, and only a small number were hired out in the years in question. The amounts due in respect of each year and the amount actually paid were as follows:—

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount of new capital applied to the development of the turf industry (a) by the State, and (b) by public companies or persons, during each of the years ended March, 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939.

The total amount of new capital applied to the development of the turf industry by the State during each of the years ended March, 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939, is as follows:— To 31st March, 1936, £8,920; to 31st March, 1937, £9,008; to 31st March, 1938, £95,281; to 31st March, 1939, £91,760. In arriving at these figures, expenditure on the administration of the Turf Development Board and certain other expenditure, such as publicity, has not been included as new capital.

I am not in a position to say what amount of capital had been supplied by public companies or persons during the years mentioned. There is no obligation on private enterprise to notify me of the amounts of capital devoted to any particular purpose.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state for each of the years ended 31st March, 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939, the number of peat works manufacturing briquettes, or otherwise preparing peat for marketing as fuel; the quantity and value of their annual production; the average number of wage-earners employed weekly; the average weekly wage; and the total annual wages; and the total amount of State aid given by way of (a) Grant-in-Aid, and (b) repayable advances or loan.

Inasmuch as there were only two concerns engaged in manufacturing briquettes or otherwise preparing peat for marketing as fuel, I regret that information in respect of production, numbers engaged and wages cannot be furnished. The amount of State aid given by way of (a) Grant-in-Aid and (b) repayable advances or loan in each of the years ended 31st March, 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939 were as follows:—

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the average retail price of turf, (a) per ton, (b) per bag in Dublin in each of the years 1935, 1937, 1938.

The predominant price per ton of machine-won turf in Dublin was 30/- in 1937 and 37/6 in 1938, and of hand-won turf 25/- in both years. For corresponding information for 1935 the Deputy is referred to the Parliamentary Debates, vol. 61, No. 1, p. 18. Average prices of turf per bag in Dublin for 1937 and 1938 are not available.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total quantity and value of the turf bought from (a) co-operative turf societies and (b) others, by coal merchants in Dublin during each of the years 1936, 1937 and 1938.

Particulars are not available in my Department of the quantity and value of the turf bought by coal merchants in Dublin for the years mentioned.
