Vol. 76 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding in County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a large number of farmers in the parish of Bekan suffer considerable loss to their crops through the flooding caused by the overflow from Bekan Lake; that several petitions have been forwarded to the Commissioners of Public Works requesting the drainage of river from the lake to the River Robe; and if he will state if any steps are being taken to have that river, which is a tributary of the River Robe, drained.

The stream referred to was not included in the original petition under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, presented to the Commissioners of Public Works in connection with the River Robe proposed drainage district nor has it been the subject of a separate petition under the Act. The commissioners have no power at this stage to incorporate additional lands in the proposed drainage district.

An application for the clearance of the stream as a minor employment scheme was received and, on examination, was not considered suitable.
