Vol. 76 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Fish.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the Sea Fisheries Association, Limited, was recently permitted to import fish, while licences to import were refused to ordinary fish traders; and, if so, if he will state the quantity of fish imported by the association under such licences; and if he will in future confine licences for the importation of fish to the ordinary traders.

I am aware that the Sea Fisheries Association have imported fish under licence, but I am not aware that licences to import fish were refused to ordinary fish traders who are entitled to licences under the Fish (Regulation of Import) (No. 2) Order, 1938. The quantity of fish imported under licence by the association during the period 8th October, 1938, to 24th June, 1939, was 272 cwts. In the interest of the Irish fishing industry I am not prepared to give the undertaking requested in the latter part of the question.
