Vol. 76 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Supplies in County Wexford.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that 44 people in Sheephouse, Baldwinstown and Rathyork, all in the Bridgetown district, are dependent for water on a private well situated threequarters of a mile away from them; that this well is unfenced, subject to pollution by cattle, and was condemned over four years ago by the county medical officer of health; and, if so, whether he will instruct the official, whom he has promised to send to County Wexford on the matter of cottage repairs, also to investigate the provision of a proper water supply for this district.

The provision of a proper supply of water for the various parts of the Wexford county health district is a matter for the board of health. I understand the Wexford Board of Health and Public Assistance have under consideration the improvement of the water supply for these areas. I will cause inquiry to be made as to the present position and communicate with the Deputy in the matter.

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's reply, does he not consider it a great hardship on those people that they have to go threequarters of a mile for water, and even then they are liable to find cattle standing in this well? That has been going on for years, and I should like to ask the Parliamentary Secretary to see that something is done to remedy it as quickly as possible.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the reason for the delay in sanctioning a water supply scheme for the village of Ballindaggin, County Wexford; and if he will take immediate steps to sanction this scheme.

A water supply scheme cannot be sanctioned before the plans of the work are approved. An inquiry is being addressed to the Wexford Board of Health as to the present position of this proposal and I will communicate with the Deputy later on.
