Vol. 77 No. 7

Written Answers. - Acquisition and Division of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have yet acquired the Kenny estate, Rossdarragh, Rathdowney, Ballybrophy, County Laoighis, and, if so, when a division scheme for same is likely to be put into operation.

The Land Commission have not acquired the lands of Rossdarragh and Cappalinnan, on the estate of Henry D. Kenny. The objection to acquisition lodged by the owner has not yet been disposed of.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission propose to institute proceedings for the acquisition of the lands held by Mrs. M.T. Connor at Hodgestown, Donadea, County Kildare, and, if so, when the lands are likely to be acquired and divided.

There are no proceedings in the Land Commission for the acquisition of the lands of Hodgestown held by Mrs. M.T. Connor.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have yet acquired the lands of Mrs. A. Monaghan, containing 164 acres at Timahoe East, on the Dobbs estate (Record No. 2870), County Kildare, and, if so, when the lands will be divided.

The Land Commission have not resumed the holding of Mrs. A. Monaghan on the Dobbs estate. The case is still under consideration.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists on the Symes estate, in the townland of Knockatinnywell, Newport, County Mayo; that Mr. James Dick, of Mullawn, Newport, has requested the Land Commission to take over his farm of 100 acres for the relief of the existing congestion; and if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Land Commission to acquire Mr. Dick's farm.

There are no proceedings pending in the Land Commission for the acquisition of the lands of Mr. James Dick for the relief of local congestion. From inquiries made by the Land Commission in 1936 it appeared that the owner was not then willing to dispose of his lands to them either by sale or exchange.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the area of the lands in South Mayo, acquired by the Congested Districts Board, now held by the Land Commission and still undivided; (b) the poor law valuation of such lands; (c) the price paid or agreed to be paid by the Congested Districts Board or Land Commission for such land and the amount of purchase price still outstanding; and (d) the amount received per annum by the Land Commission for the parts of such lands let in grazing or conacre.

The records of the Congested Districts Board estates have not been kept in such a form as to provide the information desired by the Deputy. A large part of the untenanted land acquired by the board was not acquired separately but as part of estates purchased as units including tenanted and untenanted land, and it has not been practicable to keep precise statistics of the disposal of untenanted land as distinct from tenanted land. To ascertain the particulars desired by the Deputy would entail an amount of laborious research by the indoor and outdoor staff of the Land Commission which would be out of all proportion to the value of the result. The untenanted land on the board's estates in County Mayo remaining for division consists mainly of mountain and turbary of little value and difficult to dispose of finally.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the area of land acquired by the Land Commission since 1923 in South Mayo and still undivided; (b) the poor law valuation of such lands; (c) the amount paid for, or agreed to be paid for, such lands, and the amount of purchase price still outstanding; and (d) the amount received by the Land Commission per annum from 1930 for the grazing and conacre of the undivided lands held by that Department in South Mayo.

The particulars desired by the Deputy are as follows:—

Land Acts, 1923-39.

Untenanted lands in South Mayo (i.e., the portion of the county sectionally dealt with by the Land Commission as such which is not identical with the electoral constituency of South Mayo) acquired by the Land Commission, but not yet divided to date.
