Vol. 77 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conditions of Employment of Hospital Wardsmaids.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether the Dublin Board of Public Assistance in March last requested his sanction for revised scales of pay and conditions of employment applicable to the wardsmaids employed in Rialto Hospital; whether he has yet considered or sanctioned the proposals of the board of assistance, and, if not, whether he will state the reason for a delay of more than seven months in reaching a decision in this case; further, whether he is aware that under the existing regulations the women concerned are obliged to work 150 hours in each fortnight for which they are paid 21/- per week or 3.36 pence per hour; and, whether in these circumstances he will take immediate steps to have sanctioned the proposal to increase their wages by 5/- per week and to reduce their hours of work to 48 per week.

Approval has been given to both proposals.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary state when?

In the case of the reduced hours, approval was given on 4th October. In regard to the other matter, I am not sure of the exact date, but it was some time subsequent to that.

It was only since the question was raised that sanction was given.

Had it been raised before 4th October? I was not aware of that.
