Vol. 77 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Midwives in Laoighis.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the minimum and maximum salaries presently paid to midwives employed by the Laoighis County Board of Health; the number of years taken to reach the present maximum figure; and the last date upon which the maximum salary was increased, and the amount of same.

As regards the first part the question the amounts are £52 and £67 respectively. In each of two dispensary districts there are two midwives and the salaries vary from £50 to £60. In another district the salary varies from £52 to £60 a year. In two small districts the midwives hold similar positions in adjoining counties. In one of these the salary is £8 6s. and in the other the minimum salary is £20 a year and maximum £10 a year. As regards the latter part of the question it would take approximately eight years to reach the maximum salary. The general scale in force was fixed in the year 1931. The maximum is £67.

If the local authority sends up a recommendation for an increase of the present miserable maximum salaries of midwives employed in this county, will the Parliamentary Secretary undertake to give same favourable consideration?

It will be carefully considered.

Will it be sympathetically considered?

It will be sympathetically considered, but that might not necessarily mean that it will be favourably considered.

Will it be even actively considered?
