Vol. 78 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies and Prices of Fish.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the avoidable unemployment that has occurred in the fish trade; that supplies of fish available are inadequate and that these are on offer to potential consumers at prices which are unreasonable and beyond their capacity to pay; and, if so, whether he will state what steps he proposes to take to remedy these matters; and whether, in view of the grave dissatisfaction, he will make a statement on the subject.

Inasmuch as the points raised by the Deputy do not lend themselves to satisfactory treatment by way of question and answer I propose to make a general statement on the subject of our sea fisheries when introducing a supplementary estimate for that service of which particulars are being circulated. I will then deal with the matters mentioned by the Deputy in this Question.

Including the fact that finnan haddock is ?d. now when it used to be 10d.?

I think that the Deputy wants to know what is the cost of red herrings.
