Vol. 80 No. 7

Committee on Finance. - Vote 56—Transport and Meteorological Services.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £59,887 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1941, chun Seirbhísí Iompair agus Meteoraíochta.

That a sum not exceeding £59,887 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1941, for Transport and Meteorological Services.

I should like to know if the Minister has any information to give the House in connection with the report of the Donegal Transport Committee which was set up about three years ago and has now made its report. I am particularly interested in the condition of the pier at Killybegs. An engineer in the Office of Public Works, as a result of that report, examined the structure, and I am informed that the matter is under the consideration of the Minister's Department. The existing structure is in a very bad state and the harbour commissioners have been spending practically all their revenue in maintaining it. In a short time it will be beyond their financial resources to maintain the structure at all. I should like to know if any decision has been reached on the matter and, if not, whether the Minister would expedite the matter and have the existing structure repaired or, if necessary, a new one constructed.

I may say that some of the recommendations of the committee in relation to the construction of roads have already been carried out. The question of the improvement of the harbours of Letterkenny, Burtonport and Killybegs, as the Deputy is aware, is engaging the attention of the Office of Public Works. They have carried out the surveys, but we have not yet received a report from the Office of Public Works. In view of what the Deputy has stated now, I shall get in touch with that Department and try to get a decision as soon as possible.

Vote put and agreed to.
