Vol. 80 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Air-Raid Precautions.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defensive Measures if he will state whether sufficient service is now at his disposal for A.R.P.; if he will give to the House an outline of his further requirements, if any, and if he will state how far the present programme goes.

It was estimated that for the A.R.P. scheme in Dublin the following numbers of volunteers would be required:—2,800 as wardens, 2,000 for first-aid, 460 for fire-fighting, 320 for rescue and demolition, 350 for decontamination, and 2,000 for emergency communications. Up to the present 2,000 have volunteered for the warden service, 2,800 for the first-aid service, and 270 for the fire-fighting service. The rescue and demolition service is being undertaken by the builders in the city and the necessary arrangements are being made with them. The decontamination service is being organised by the corporation, and is being manned with their staffs. The persons required for emergency communications would be mainly youths, and the scouts' organisations have offered to provide volunteers for this service. Accordingly, a further 800 wardens and about 200 for the fire-fighting service in addition to a certain number for reserve are required. The present programme aims at providing for all emergencies that can reasonably be foreseen at the moment.
