Vol. 81 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Communication with Cork Islands.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is now prepared to end immediately the long delay in the proposed establishment of telephonic communication with the islands of Sherkin and Cape Clear, County Cork.

The apparatus for the wireless service to the coastal islands has been on order for a considerable time past but abnormal delay in delivery has arisen owing to war conditions. Delivery is, however, expected shortly and work on installation of the Cape Clear and Sherkin Islands will be then put in hand as early as possible. It is necessary to point out, however, that approaching winter weather conditions might hamper and delay the work of installation of the island services, particularly in the case of Cape Clear owing to the distance of that island off the coast and its exposed position.

Would the Minister say that, given normal weather conditions and an end to the difficulty in getting the supply, his Department will not stop then?

There is nothing else to stop the Department.

Is the Minister aware that the British Government had a communication with the mainland 60 years ago?
