Vol. 81 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tree Felling in Cavan.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that a number of trees were cut on two holdings in the Swanlinbar (Cavan) district by either the military or the Local Security Force without giving notice to the owners with the result that cattle on the lands were allowed to stray, and whether he is further aware that several communications on the matter have been sent to his Department, and that no reply has been received.

I am aware that communications have been received in my Department relative to the cutting of trees on two holdings in the Swanlinbar district by members of the Defence Forces or of the Local Security Force. It is not claimed in these communications that the cutting of the trees resulted in cattle being allowed to stray. Claims for compensation furnished on behalf of the owners of the holdings are at present the subject of investigation.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is the owner not entitled to get notice that the trees are about to be cut down before they are tampered with?

In the circumstances, I understand that it was not possible to do so.
