Vol. 81 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Widows' and Orphans' Pensions.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health how many persons in each of the following categories are in receipt of a pension under the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act: (1) widows of agricultural labourers; (2) widows of agricultural labourers in respect of dependent children; (3) orphans of agricultural labourers.

Pensions payable under the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Acts are of two kinds, non-contributory pensions and contributory pensions. Out of a total of 34,700 pensions payable as at 31st October, 1940, more than 29,000 were non-contributory pensions. There is no information as to the number of non-contributory pensions payable to the widows and orphans of agricultural labourers. The number of persons in the categories referred to in the question who were in receipt of contributory pensions on 31st October, 1940, are as follows:—

(1) Widows of agricultural labourers

776

(2) Widows of agricultural labourers in respect of dependent children
