Vol. 81 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Bus Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that owing to the petrol restrictions on private car owners there is an increased demand for bus transport at rush hours, and whether in view of this he will take into consideration the question of increased transport at these times and urge upon the tramways company the necessity for such an increased service.

The reply to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part of the question, it is understood that the Dublin United Tramways Company is providing such increased transport facilities as are shown to be necessary during rush hours in the Dublin metropolitan area, consistent with the maintenance of its essential services and the necessity for conserving supplies of fuel oil.

Is the Minister aware that, as a result of insufficient bus services in the city, many workers are inconvenienced by inability to go home to their meals and would he make representations to the employers of the city, seeing that 1 o'clock is the standard dinner hour, with a view to making arrangements for staggering the meal hour?

I shall be glad to make representations to employers with a view to having that suggestion considered.

Mr. Byrne

Will the Minister see that the tramway company does not in any way reduce the present bus services? There is a rumour in town this morning that that may be done shortly. Before it is done, I ask the Minister to appeal to the tramway company not to reduce the existing services.

I should be very slow to interfere with the judgment and responsibility of the tramway company in that connection, particularly in view of the uncertain nature of their supplies.
