Vol. 81 No. 11

Written Answers. - Butter Exports to Europe.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state in respect of the purchase and export of butter to Germany, Belgium, etc., by the Newmarket Dairy Company, Limited, (1) the year, (2) the value of the exports, (3) the amount of bounty paid, (4) the amount of subsidy paid, and (5) the net profit or loss to the balance sheet.

Butter was exported by the Newmarket Dairy Company to Germany and Belgium in each of the years 1935 to 1938 inclusive, in accordance with arrangements made under the Trade Agreements with these countries. The total quantity so exported was 162,868 cwt. The returns received from Germany and Belgium in respect of this butter totalled £794,922. It has been estimated that the transactions resulted in an advantage to the Exchequer of £140,280 by way of savings on export subsidies on the assumption that the butter if it had not been exported to these countries would have been exported to Great Britain.

Prior to the Trade Agreements referred to the Newmarket Dairy Company exported to Belgium 17,866 cwts. of butter in respect of which it has been estimated that a sum of approximately £10,890 had to be paid by way of export subsidy in excess of the amount of export subsidy that would have been payable if the butter had been exported to Great Britain. The estimated net saving to the Exchequer on all these transactions is, therefore, £129,390.
