Written Answers. - Petrol Consumption by Gardaí.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the quantity of petrol used by officers and members of the Gárda Síochána during the years 1938, 1939 and 1940, and also the cost of same.

Return of the amount and cost of petrol purchased directly out of public funds for the use of the Gárda Síochána during the financial years 1938-39, 1939-40, and the first nine months of 1940-41:—

The figures do not include petrol purchased by district and divisional officers. Each of these officers is normally obliged to keep a private motor-car and to use it on Gárda duty. Petrol is purchased, as required, by the officer concerned and he is recouped for the expenses incurred by way of an allowance.

The figures do, however, include petrol used on various duties which are not essentially Gárda duties, but for which Gárda cars are in fact used as indicated in the footnote on page 151 of the Estimates for the current financial year.
