Vol. 82 No. 7

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slaughter of Fowl.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will take steps to prevent the wholesale slaughter of fowl intended for egg production.

I am not aware that there has been wholesale killing of fowl suitable for egg production. Poultry-keepers have always been advised to sell off old and unprofitable hens so as to afford better scope for the maintenance of younger and more productive birds. Owing to the shortage of feeding stuffs it is understood that the sale of old hens is taking place to a greater extent than usual. In the circumstances I do not propose to take any action on the matter.

Has the Minister taken any special measures this year to increase the supply of day-old chicks?

There will be an increased supply available.

The Minister will do his best in the matter?
