Vol. 83 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Bus Fares.

Eamon O Ciosáin

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that bus fares have been raised excessively in North Kerry within recent weeks; that on the Listowel-Ballybunion route the fare has been doubled, and if he will urge upon the Great Southern Railways Company the necessity for a reduction in the said charges.

The fares on the Great Southern Railway Company's omnibus services operating in North Kerry were subject to the recent increases imposed generally by the company in the fares of its omnibus services, but the increased fares appear to be within the maximum charges permitted by the Road Transport Regulations, 1932.

According to the information supplied by the company, the increases in fares on the Listowel-Ballybunion route have not exceeded 50 per cent. in any instance, the average increase being 35 per cent., and all increased fares are within the statutory limits referred to.

The whole matter of the grounds for the increases generally in their omnibus fares by the Great Southern Railways Company, and the justification therefor, is at present the subject of detailed investigation by my Department.
