Vol. 83 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Opening of Ports for Cattle Exports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the subsidence of the epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease indicated by the relaxations of the restrictions on the movement of live stock in certain areas he will consider the opening of negotiations for the restarting of cattle shipments through the port of Rosslare Harbour, as unless an export trade for cattle is provided it will be impossible for landholders to find the money to pay their rates and annuities.

As soon as the foot-and-mouth disease position permits, the British authorities will be approached with a view to the reopening of the ports for the shipment of live animals. When this will be possible depends entirely on the co-operation received from stock owners themselves in the measures being taken to stamp out the disease.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will arrange with the Minister of Agriculture in Great Britain to have the ports opened for the export of cattle from those counties which have been entirely free from cattle disease, i.e., Sligo, Mayo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan and Louth.

Consideration will be given to the question of having ports adjoining areas in which no outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease have occurred opened first for the export of live animals. It is probable that when export is permitted it will be limited for some time to animals for immediate slaughter.
