Vol. 83 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acreage of Wheat.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he can say approximately the total acreage sown to wheat this year.

I am aware that, because of adverse weather in January and February last, some farmers who had obtained supplies of seed wheat of winter varieties were unable to make sowings to the extent they had proposed. I am also aware that the sowings of spring varieties are substantially larger than those of last year. It is not possible at this stage to make a reliable estimate of the total acreage under wheat this season. Crop returns will, however, be collected as early as possible.

Could the Minister say what acreage of wheat was sown up to January, or up to any month for which statistics are available?

It is not even possible to say that, because a large part of the wheat sown was wheat kept over by the farmers themselves.

Is the Minister satisfied that the acreage under wheat, or the acreage to be sown this year, will be sufficient to give us an all-wheat loaf?

I am not at all satisfied that it will.

Mr. Brennan

The Minister has no reliable information as to the amount actually sown?
