Vol. 83 No. 9

In Committee. - Second Amendment of the Constitution Bill, 1940—From the Seanad.

I move: That the Committee agree with the Seanad in the following amendment:—

SCHEDULE.

At Reference No. 23, in Column 3, all words and commas after the words "sa Bhunreacht so" deleted and the words and commas "a riarfar ceart, agus is go poiblidhe a déanfar sin ach amháin insna cásannaibh speisialta teoranta sin a hordóchar le dligheadh." substituted therefor; and in Column 4, all words after the word "Constitution" deleted and the words and commas ", and, save in such special and limited cases as may be prescribed by law, shall be administered in public" substituted therefor.

SCEIDEAL.

Ag Uimh. Thagartha 23 na focail agus na comaí uile i ndiaidh na bhfocal "sa Bhunreacht so" do scriosadh as Colún 3 agus na focail agus na comaí "a riarfar ceart, agus is go poiblidhe a déanfar sin ach amháin insna cásannaibh speisialta teoranta sin a hordóchar le dligheadh." do chur ina n-ionad; agus na focail uile i ndiaidh an fhocail "Constitution" do scriosadh as Colún 4 agus na focail agus na comaí ", and, save in such special and limited cases as may be prescribed by law, shall be administered in public" do chur ina n-ionad.

This amendment was really inserted as the result of a remark made, I think, by one of the Deputies on the opposite benches with regard to a possible ambiguity in the wording as it stood. I do not think there will be any dispute about it.

What is the position now? Is it proposed finally to dispose of this matter?

Is it relevant to inquire why certain other amendments proposed by the Seanad are not being proceeded with?

No other amendments were passed. This is the only amendment from the Seanad.

This is the only matter for discussion now?

The only matter is this amendment.

Question agreed to.

Perhaps the Taoiseach will tell us when does the period run out for amendment by legislation?

On the 24th June of this year.

Agreement with Seanad amendment reported; report agreed to.

Message to be sent to the Seanad accordingly.
