Vol. 83 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Quality of Coal Supplies.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he has made any representations to the British Government concerning the inferior quality of the coal supplied recently to this country from British collieries, and, if so, whether he has obtained assurances that better quality coals will be made available in the near future.

My Department is in constant touch with the appropriate British Departments in regard to coal supplies. There appears to be no immediate prospect of an improvement in the quality of coal available for domestic use.

Will the Minister make representations to the British Government pointing out that the quality of the coal imported is not at all worth the price charged for it, with a view to securing a reduction in the price of the inferior quality coal that is being sent here?

Such representations have been made.

Will the Minister say what reply was received?

That there is no immediate prospect of an improvement in the position.

That means that there is no immediate prospect of a reduction in the price.
