Vol. 83 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Anthracite Coal Output.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what steps are being taken, or are in contemplation, to increase the output of anthracite coal and what measures have been taken to provide suitable appliances to enable factories, institutions and domestic consumers to use such coal in increasing quantities.

The company, the creation of which was authorised by the Slievardagh Coalfield Development Act, 1941, was incorporated on May 20th. The objects of the company are to develop the Slievardagh Coalfield and any other coal deposits that the company may be authorised by the Minister for Industry and Commerce to acquire.

The necessity for providing appliances suitable for burning anthracite will not arise until production has increased substantially above the present level. At the moment the amount of anthracite that can be supplied to the market is short of the demand.
