Vol. 83 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Printing Contracts.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether the contracts entered into by (a) Waterford County Committee of Agriculture, and (b) Kilkenny County Committee of Agriculture, both of which are administered by a commissioner, for the printing of the current annual reports of these bodies contains a fair wages clause, and, if so, whether he will state the terms in which such clause is inserted in the respective contracts and if a fair wages clause has not been inserted in either or both contracts whether he is prepared to refuse sanction of the contract or contracts as the case may be.

As my specific sanction is not required for the contracts for printing entered into by county committees of agriculture, I am unable to say whether the contracts mentioned by the Deputy contain a fair wages clause.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I understand from a communication furnished by the commissioner to the Kilkenny Workers' Council that he claimed he had got the sanction of the Department.

That may be, but I have no right to insist on a fair wages clause. The making of contracts is a matter for the committees themselves.

Does the Minister approve of the fair wages clause?

It has never been put up to me.

If it is put up to the Minister, will he approve of it?

I do not know.
