Vol. 83 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Railway Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that by virtue of a Railway Wages Board determination made subsequent to May 7th last upwards of 800 workers employed in Ireland by British railway companies would, but for the operation of the Emergency Powers (No. 83) Order, have received in recent weeks substantial advances in their wages with retrospective effect to January 6th, 1941; and, if so, whether he is prepared to modify the order so as to enable the payment in this country by extern employers of any increases in wages to which their Irish workers employed in Ireland may be entitled.

I have been considering this and other points raised at the recent interview which a deputation from the Executive of the Irish Trade Union Congress had with the Taoiseach, the Minister for Supplies and myself, and I hope in the near future to be in a position to meet the specific case of the Railway Wages Board determination to which the Deputy refers.
