Vol. 83 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Duty Free Fuel.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that the shortage of tractor fuel has been accentuated by the illicit use of this duty free fuel in lorries and other vehicles, and whether he will consider the advisability of eliminating this unlawful practice by colouring kerosene so that at all times it can be easily recognised.

I have reason to believe that tractor fuel has been illicitly used in lorries and other road vehicles and action has been taken to check this abuse. I am not satisfied that the colouring of kerosene would have the result contemplated by the Deputy, but the suggestion will be kept in mind.

If you were to colour kerosene and it was used illicitly in a lorry, a Guard could look into the tank and, if the stuff were coloured, he would realise it was kerosene. That would be a simple way of ascertaining whether there was kerosene in the tank or not. I ask the Minister to reconsider the matter.
