Vol. 83 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fuel Supplies for Cork.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state (a) what provision, if any, has been made by the Cork City Manager for fuel supplies for Cork City area; (b) the number of tons of turf provided; (c) the number of men employed by Cork City authority on turf-cutting schemes.

I am informed the Cork City Manager has had consultations with representatives of the coal trade in the city regarding the arrangements for the supply of fuel. The number of men at present employed on turf cutting is 190, and employment is being increased every week. At present I cannot say how many tons of turf will be provided.

Does the Minister consider that 109 people are going to cut sufficient turf for Cork City considering that they only started work last week?

Is the Minister aware that this particular city authority is to be area commissioner in charge of Cork County during an emergency and does he consider him a fit and proper person to have that post, considering the arrangements he is making now?

That is another question, but I do not accept the implications of the Deputy.
