Vol. 83 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Air-Raid Precautions in Dublin.

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defensive Measures if he will state on what basis the establishments for the various air-raid precautions service in Dublin are computed; what steps are being taken to enrol volunteers up to the numbers of the establishments, and if, as a result of recent experience, it is proposed to increase the establishment for any of the services.

The establishments for the various air-raid precautions services in Dublin are in accordance with the schemes submitted by the corporation and approved, with amendments in a number of cases, on the advice of my technicians. The volunteers for the various services are recruited by the Dublin Corporation, who are continuing their efforts to obtain the numbers required. The intensity and effects of air raids which have been experienced during the present war were found to be in many ways unpredictable. As the result of experience, it has been decided to increase considerably the strength of the fire-fighting service and the rescue service in Dublin. The fire-fighting personnel has been increased from 686 to 760. A national fire-fighting reserve consisting of six heavy self-propelled units and six large trailer units is also being formed at a convenient distance from Dublin to provide a reserve for the whole country. The personnel for this service will be 78. The strength of the rescue service has been increased from 350 to 600.
