Vol. 83 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Grant to Infant Aid Society.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if his attention has been drawn to the Infant Aid Society Annual Report for 1940-41, in which it is stated that owing to the rise in the price of milk combined with the increase of unemployment and consequent increase in applicants for free milk, the society finds it hard to meet the demands made upon its resources; if, further, he is aware that at the present time a much greater supply of milk is required to off-set the shortage in other foodstuffs; that so far from being in a position to increase the amount distributed, the society has been obliged to curtail milk allowances, and if he will have the grant for that purpose increased so that the activities of the society may be extended.

The distribution of milk will form part of the additional allowances which as announced by the Minister for Finance are to be made available for certain classes who are dependent upon assistance from various public sources. Arrangements for the distribution of these allowances will be completed soon. The quantity of free milk will then be considerably increased.
