Vol. 83 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Air-Raid Precaution Wardens.

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defensive Measures if, in view of the facts that the number of air-raid wardens appointed in Dublin City is 740 short of the establishment and that in some areas "auxiliary" wardens are being enrolled, he will authorise the appointment to the official service of those auxiliary wardens in order that they may be fully trained and equipped.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to a question on the 29th May, 1941, there are no such things as auxiliary wardens. As mentioned on that occasion, there are very few sectors in which the establishment for the wardens' service has been exceeded. It is not practicable to utilise in one area the wardens which are surplus in other areas. Recruitment for the wardens' service is still proceeding in the sectors where the establishments have not been reached. The equipment available is to meet establishments only. It is not, therefore, possible to equip wardens surplus to establishment in any sector.
