Vol. 84 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transhipment of Cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether cattle from Northern Ireland are allowed to be transhipped through the territory of Éire in sealed wagons while foot-and-mouth disease is in existence in Northern Ireland, and, if so, whether reciprocal facilities are afforded by the Government of Northern Ireland for transhipment of cattle through Northern Ireland from Cavan, Monaghan and Louth to Donegal.

I am not aware of the movement by rail or otherwise of any cattle from Northern Ireland to any point on this side of the Border since the commencement of the present outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. Facilities were recently afforded by the authorities in Northern Ireland for the movement of cattle by rail from County Donegal through Northern Ireland to Dublin and for the movement of bulls from certain of the southern counties though Northern Ireland to County Donegal. These are the only instances in which the question of such movements has arisen.
